Hundreds of natural cleaning blog posts, books, and magazine columns recommend cleaning slow kitchen drains by pouring one cup of baking soda down the drain followed with one cup vinegar. I used this combination for many years then I began to doubt its effectiveness.
I decided to conduct an experiment to compare the drain cleaning abilities of vinegar & baking soda to another popular green cleaning solution -> dish detergent & hot water.
The Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment
I conducted a simple experiment to compare two popular green cleaners when fighting a fat, oil, and grease drain clog (or FOG drain clog). FOG is the most common cause of slow drains and backup in home kitchens.
Step 1 – I used a tablespoon of butter to mimic a greasy FOG drain clog.
Step 2 – I poured one-half cup of baking soda and one-half cup of vinegar into one bowl, and a cup of hot water (nearly boiling) mixed with 1 tablespoon of dish washing detergent into the second bowl.
Step 3 – I watched what happened to the greasy clog for 5 minutes. Here’s what the bowls looked like at 30 seconds.

Clogged Drain Alternatives
You will come across few things that are more annoying than a drain that's plugged. When the kitchen sink is plugged, you cannot continue to use it. When a shower plug hole gets clogged, it can be difficult. If your shower is draining slowly, you will be stood in dirty water, and a layer of soap scum will build up on the bottom of the shower. If you would like to prevent your drains from getting clogged in the first place, here are a few measures to take.
• Drain Screens for Showers - To prevent hairs from getting into the plug hole and blocking the shower, you can set a drain screen over the drain opening. This captures most of the hair, and you can clean the screen occasionally.
• Be Careful What You Flush Down the Toilet - Though it is okay to flush toilet paper and tissues down the toilet, there are some things that you should not. Articles like baby wipes, band-aids, paper towels and diapers should be thrown in the rubbish bin not down the toilet.
• Tipping Grease Down Your Drains - A typical blunder is to pour grease down the drain. Grease accumulates in the piping when it cools down. It seems an inconvenience to put grease in a jar, but it's better than getting a blocked drain.
• Garbage Disposer Problems - While there are lots of things that can be put in the waste disposal, it's best to steer clear of shoving eggshells, leftover fruit and vegetable peel down the garbage disposal. This should keep your system working effectively.
If your drains do get stopped up, try not to use liquid drain cleaners. Such products are not always efficient, and they may harm your pipes. You could try putting vinegar down the sink and let it sit for a while, then chase it with hot water. If this doesn't do the job, then get in touch with a local plumber.
Grease Should Never go Down a Kitchen Drain
The biggest mistake that people make in the kitchen sink is pouring grease down the drain. Grease builds up in cold pipes and each time it hardens the opening gets a little smaller. It may seem like a hassle to drain the grease in a jar and throw it in the trash, but its worth it in the long run.
Use a Drain Screen in The Shower
To keep hair from getting down the shower drain and clogging it up you can place a drain screen over the drain. This will catch the hair and after you shower, you can clean the screen.
Use Your Garbage Disposal Wisely
Many people have garbage disposals under the sink. However, if you don't use your garbage disposal wisely you can end up with problems. While there are plenty of things that can go down the disposal, you should avoid the following. Do not throw the following down the chute, hard seeds like a peach pit, egg shells, meat and surprisingly small seeds can block it completely.
Watch What You Flush Down the Toilet
While it is fine to flush toilet paper and tissues down the drain, there are certain things that you should not. Things like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes and band-aids are examples of stuff that will back up a toilet. Anything that is not biodegradable should not go down the toilet.
Time to Call a Plumber
You can call a plumber to fix a clogged drain. They can use an auger or even high pressure water to flush and clear everything that could potentially clog drain. When you have this service performed it will blast out anything that was blocking your drain.

You can try pouring some baking soda down the drain followed by the same amount of of vinegar and let it sit for ten or fifteen minutes. Then pour piping hot water down the drain to soften things up.
